Geely Coolray Expert Review
Team SayaraBay says
Among the top Chinese automakers that have a strong presence in KSA, Geely tops the list, an early entrant, and with a range of modern, affordable and tech-packed cars, is well-established in our market.
The Geely Coolray was launched globally in 2019 in the B-segment and it serves as the brand's flagship compact crossover SUV. It sits above the Binary and below the Azkarra, targeting young buyers who want a sporty SUV with the latest tech. With contemporary design, robust powertrain and agile handling, the Coolray has gained considerable popularity in KSAâs fast-growing compact crossover market, with an affordable price (SAR 75,555â93,035) and performance, it takes on rivals like Hyundai Venue and Kia Sonet
Interior
Design & Quality
Inside, the Coolray feels more premium than its segment suggests. The leather is eco-friendly, not sure what that means, but feels comfortable though and soft-touch panels handle dust well, and the new 10.25-inch touchscreen with ambient lighting gives the cabin a modern feel. Even after long hours on uneven roads, the seats stayed comfortable, and I didnât hear rattles. The panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, and PM2.5 filter elevate it beyond rivals like the Hyundai Venue. Build quality feels durable, and the stitched finish lends it a touch of luxury, so within the price range, the cockpit is certainly well covered with a lot of attention to detail and thoughtful design
Front Seat
The driverâs seat is as good as it gets, with excellent support and features, and easy 6-way manual adjustments to help personalise the setting of the seat. The lumbar support kept me comfortable on long drives, and the ventilated option is a must in KSA summers. The quite frankly visibility was decent as the windshield is huge and the commanding seat position covers front and side views well. The steering wheel controls kept everything within reach, easy and quick.Â
Electronic Parking Brake
The electronic parking brake with auto-hold quickly became a favourite feature. It took the stress out of stop-and-go traffic and performed flawlessly on slopes.
Rear Seat
The rear bench comfortably seats three average-sized adults, with legroom better than expected, certainly one or two of its main rivals. For comfort, rear vents and charging ports ensure passengers are well taken care of with their need for comfort and connectivity, while the flat-folding seats expand boot space easily. We noticed the ability of upholstery to resist sand well, and the optional sunshades would definitely be worth adding for summer.
AC Vents
Cooling is one of Coolrayâs strengths; any day, we experienced it first-hand.. The dual-zone system brought cabin temps down quickly, even in 40°C heat, and rear vents kept everyone comfortable; no complaints from the rear seat. Voice controls worked surprisingly well on highways, something beyond my expectations, and certainly a nice convenience.
Storage Options
Storage is well thought out, like a deep console, large door bins for 1-liter bottles, and under-floor boot space, quite enough for the size of this SUV.Â
Armrests
Both front and rear armrests are practical. The sliding front armrest worked as a small workspace, while the rear one with cupholders added comfort for passengers.
Charging Options
There is a USB-A, USB-C, and a 12V socket, and also a wireless pad at the front on higher trims.
Boot Space
The boot size is 330 litres, and you can easily expand it too with adjusting the seat, like cars of this type these days. Minor sounding but practical features like tie-downs and a retractable cover secure loads, help keep the luggage or smaller item organized after shopping or long road trips.

Exterior
The Coolray looks a lot contemporary from the exterior, and its compact size, measuring less than 4.5 meters in length, 1.6 meters in height and 2600 mm in wheelbase, appears quite fine for city use.
The ground clearance of 170 mm is not bad for an SUV, in fact, that is what differentiates it from a sedan, and so navigating city roads or even desert sands, which youâll occasionally see, shouldnât be a problem. The ripples-shaped grille and sharp LED lights something quite distinctive about the Cooltay, which makes it very youthful, right fully so, as Geely targets these buyers.Â
Front
Up front, the upscale grille with chrome strips gives the SUV a premium appeal. What defines the front shiny, wide LED headlights, fog lamps, curved hood and stylish running lights. The lower air dam and skid plate are good for stability and some protection from scratches or any hits. The front design is what makes the Coolray unique among its peers, and Geely retains an upper hand with style.
Side
From the side, the flowing lines and 17-inch alloys are two key elements that give the Coolray a pure SUV look, which essentially is a balance of sportiness and practicality. So elements that enhance the appeal include chrome trim around the windows, the side steps and also quality materials. What is also noticeable is that the long wheelbase makes the Coolray feel a lot more secure, and the curved doors and flush handles give it a high-end vibe, so do the roof rails that hold camping gear with no fuss, and the side skirts with cladding help shrug off sand and small stones.
Alloy Wheels
The 17-inch alloys with 215/60R17 tires are stylish, attractive and also quite rugged, and so you are free to ride across all types of roads or light desert trails. Youâre also assured of a greater grip, lower noise and good looks along with long life.
Rear
Geely tries to make the rear a little special though, and it looks like they have, which appears sharp and functional. The LED taillights give a wider look, and the power triage fits nicely into the overall design elements. Easy to access as well, and dual exhaust tips and a small spoiler are some elements for an athletic look and the diffuser ties blend nicely.
Colors
We tested Red and Grey, and both the colours look just fine, but you can also get to choose from White, Silver, Black, and Blue.

City Performance
In city traffic, the Coolray feels more energetic than I expected. The 172 hp turbo engine with 290 Nm of torque makes merging into the cityâs crowded lanes surprisingly easy. The 7-speed DCT shifts cleanly even in stop-and-go, without the jerky feel some dual-clutch boxes have. Parking in tight mall spots is no trouble, the compact footprint helps a lot, and the 360-camera on the GF Plus trim makes threading through traffic or backing into a slot far less stressful. On fuel, I averaged just under 15 km/L in daily use, which is strong for a turbo SUV. When fully loaded, it still had enough punch to keep up with traffic, though I did notice some engine grumbling at lower speeds. The suspension takes speed bumps smoothly, but does feel firm if you hit a deep pothole. Overall, in the city, it feels light on its feet, fun and easy to drive.
Highway Performance
Take it on the highway, and the Coolray shows its stronger side. The same 172 hp and 290 Nm that feel sprightly in town translate into confident overtakes. The mileage number stayed around 15.6 km/L, which is fine at highway pace. Stability in crosswinds is reassuring, and the cabin stays calm, with very little wind noise creeping in. There was a slight hesitation on uphill climbs when the car was full of passengers and luggage, but flicking it into Sport mode ironed that out. Paddle shifters are a nice touch when you want extra control. Cruise control worked flawlessly, letting me cover distance without fatigue. The Coolray feels well-built for long family trips across our wide-open highways.
Ride and Handling
Ride quality is one of the key strengths of this compact crossover. you âll know why, like I just did. The suspension deals with gravel roads and highway imperfections smoothly, though sharp bumps do come through a little firmly. On long stretches, the seats stayed comfortable, and the car felt stable even when loaded. The steering is light in the city but still precise enough to enjoy the curve, it doesnât feel vague the way some rivals do. The BMA platform gives it a planted feel, and the 170 mm clearance is just enough for light off-road patches near Jeddah without scraping. I tried Eco mode on sandy stretches and the car adjusted power delivery well, helping it stay efficient without spinning wheels unnecessarily. Compared to rivals like the Hyundai Venue, the Coolray appears quite successfully as refined and nimble, and scores well when it comes to comfort, stability, and fun.

It feels a lot efficient and the ride quality is good, and so overall, not a bad choice if you canât increase your budget, decently loaded for a family who wants a practical SUV
Mid Comfort GC
Priced at SAR 82,685, the Mid Comfort GC upgrades the 1.5L turbo while numbers are the same (172 hp, 290 Nm), with that higher price, you get additional features like cruise control and rear vents. The automatic transmission is ideal for city drives, and the design offers better comfort with ambient lighting. So, it does make sense to pay that extra price for the number of cool features that make your driving experience quite better, without the top-end price.
Full Option Gf Plus
With considerable price hike, starting at SAR 93,035, this is a top variant with luxury features. This comprises over and above the mid-varieties, like panoramic sunroof and 360-degree camera. The design comes with paddle shift and power tailgate, and if you are fine with the price, this is the model for you.
SayaraBay Recommendation
The Mid Comfort GC at SAR 82,685 feels like the right balance for KSA buyers, and that is our recommendation. The powertrain is great, superb for city and highway driving for individuals or families. The mileage is good, and the number of features makes it comfortable and practical. Against rivals like the Venue, it offers more features and refinement at a sharper price.
Verdict
Geely is offering a better product in Coolray, in the highly popular and fast-growing compact crossover of KSA. IT has what it takes to attract buyers; we arrived at that conclusion due to its excellent combination of style, tech, and value in equal measure.
The promise of fresh design, practical space, and well-equipped features like a PM2.5 filter and blind spot detection, something buyers here need and like. You donât complain about the mileage figure of 15.6 km/L, which actually means lower running cost, and while stability and comfort make longer drives enjoyable. If pitched against rivals such as the Sonet or Venue, the Coolray feels more powerful and polished. For young families or urban buyers seeking affordability without compromise, itâs an easy crossover to recommend.
