Changan Hunter Expert Review
Team SayaraBay says
The Changan Hunter, a strong, highly capable midsize pickup, paves the way for the Chinese brand's entry into the commercial truck market. This Hunter, which debuted in 2021, sits above brands' SUVs and sedans, considered a multi-purpose work and lifestyle vehicle.
In Saudi Arabia, where pickups play a vital role in business hauling, desert exploration, and family use amid rising fuel costs, the Hunter makes quite an appealing proposition. Its affordability and versatility provide a suitable option to the Toyota Hilux. It is known for its sharper look and aggressive posture, a 1-ton payload, 231 mm ground clearance, off-road abilities and a durable chassis.
Interior
Design & Quality
Being a rugged pickup means the cabin has that tough feel, and once inside, you get to experience sturdiness, but it certainly feels welcoming. The durability and quality are notable, and don't go by Chinese brands, they're actually a lot better, taking on KSA's dust and heat. The brand has introduced a new dashboard with softer-touch materials, a larger touchscreen, and upgraded stitching on seats. Things that impressed inside the cabin are the spacious layout, durable plastics, and premium touches such as the ambient lighting for grand vibes, unlike a typical truck. If you look at the competition, the Huster has something to talk about, like superior cargo space and advanced safety features, but at a much affordable price tag. The built quality isn't that bad for some touch driving and use cases, and the combination of toughness and comfort is excellent.
Front Seat
The front seats come with outstanding comfort, with eight-way manual adjustments with lumbar support, for the right driving position with a clear view of the front and sides for a safer drive. The leather-wrapped steering wheel is grippy and has audio and cruise controls, so you can focus on the roads without any distraction. The seating position is higher, and it feels like an upmarket SUV with a commanding view, so you feel in total control.
Electronic Parking Brake
The electronic parking brake with auto-hold at the centre console is easy to access and also makes parking a lot simpler on inclines or in heavy traffic when the average speed is extremely low. This is qutie an important feature which is often underrated, but mostly comes as standard these days across all vehicles, replacing the manual ones which used to occupy a lot of space.
Rear Seat
The double-cab rear bench seats are good for three adults, not the most spacious, but they work; the leg, shoulder and headroom are not bad. If not used for passengers, then you can certainly load cargo as extra storage. On the higher trims, you get rear AC vents and USB ports, both are necessary elements for comfort and connectivity, something quite useful for family trips
AC Vents
The dual-zone automatic climate control with rear vents is powerful. And, you're taken care of well with instant cooling even in the most scorching heat that we experience in the KSA summer. The advantage of voice-activated adjustments allows hands-free operation, a huge factor on busy highways.
Storage Options
Storage is not bad for all that stuff you wish to carry on every single trip. Like a large centre console, door pockets for 1-litre bottles, and under-seat space.
Armrest
Front and rear centre armrests with cupholders for extra comfort. The front armrest doubles as a workspace to keep mobile offices on the go.
Charging Options
There are USB-A and USB-C ports, along with a 12V socket, to keep devices powered all the time, no worry to stay out of touch. The optional wireless charging pad on Delta trims is something more convenient for tech-savvy buyers.
Boot Space
The Hunter’s cargo deck sturdy 1-ton payload capacity with about 1,300 litres of volume. It is just fine carrying all that heavy-duty cargo. It is equipped with tie-downs and a protective bed liner, hence allows your loads to stay secure and the bed to prevent any damage.
Safety
- Dual airbags
- ABS with EBD
- ESP and TCS
- Hill Start/Descent Control
- Rear parking sensors

Exterior
From the overall appearance, the Hunder seems to combine rugged outlook, performance with stylish design. Its overall built quality, size and abilities make it suitable for diverse landscapes of the Kingdom, be it city roads or sandy dunes.
Its dimensions are 5,330 mm in length, 1,930 mm in width, and 1,835 mm in height, with a 3,180 mm wheelbase, highlighting the truck's relatively big size and an imposing stable footprint. The 231 mm ground clearance, higher than many competitors, allows it to take on light off-roading with ease.
The bolder front grille with chrome accents, attractive LED lighting, and aerodynamic lines are some of the key highlights, along with a muscular figure. The exterior’s practical design includes roof rails and side steps, making it ideal for work and adventure.
Front
Just like a pickup truck is supposed to be, the front is unmistakably bold and also functional. Clearly visible is a large grille with chrome or black finishes, depending on the trim, nicely joined with LED daytime running lights that cut through dust or at night. Air intakes below look classy and improve engine cooling in KSA’s scorching heat, while fog lamps enhance visibility during sandstorms. The design is a combination of strength, style and also practicality.
Side
No matter which side you take a look at, the Hunter appears strong, supported by muscular wheel arches and curved body lines, which also make it a premium pickup. The Side steps, standard on higher trims, simplify entry and exit, especially with carrying cargo or gear in hand. The roof rails increase its utility for camping or work equipment, and the long wheelbase enables a smooth ride on tough and challenging terrain.
Alloy Wheels
All trims come with 17-inch alloy wheels fitted with 265/65R17 all-terrain tires, offering a balance of highway comfort and desert grip. The alloys provide a stylish touch, boosting the truck’s overall appeal.
Rear
Being pickup so every design aspect is practical and durable, the same is true with the rear, where you find some elegance too. The LED taillights give an upmarket vibe, glow brightly, and power tailgate to ensure access is quick and easy with minimum effort when loading or unloading. The box looks big and makes the entire truck complete, composed and attractive. The black exhaust tips and skid plates underscore its rugged feel, while a hidden tow hitch keeps lines clean for family use.
Colors
You get to choose the Hunter from 6 different colours presently available in KSA. They are White, Silver, Black, Grey, Blue, and Red, and others.

City Performance
Driving the Hunter in the city is made easier by its 147 hp and 350 Nm torque from the 1.9L diesel powertrain. The manual or automatic transmission shifts smoothly in traffic, and the responsive steering helps in ease in places where it isn’t always easy. The fuel economy is good, in double digits, something much better for a truck of this size.. Its power even after full load feels good, but we found the engine makes some noise when idle. The torque for city towing is sufficient, and the rear camera is a good addition for safety when driving through crowded or congested areas. And, the Eco mode enhances fuel use in stop-and-go traffic, while the Power mode allows quick starts at traffic signals.
Highway Performance
On KSA highways, the Hunter’s powertrain is equally good, with a top speed of 170 km/h in less than 12 seconds. It is even better than the city, so if you’re taking intercity trips, it offers benefits. Its stability in crosswinds and the quiet cabin with laminated glass feel like an upmarket SUV. You may feel a slight lag when fully loaded uphill, but the AT clears it smoothly. For the highway, the cruise control is a big help and reduces a lot of fatigue during long drives. The Off-Road mode makes traction better on desert highways, while the well-tuned suspension is capable of handling some bumps. Its towing capacity of 3,000 kg supports your caravan trips, and the high ground clearance boosts confidence on remote routes.
Ride and Handling
Despite being a truck, the Hunter’s ride is smooth, just like you’re in a nice SUV. This is largely due to the high-quality suspension. The double wishbone independent suspension in the front and a dependent (live axle) suspension at the rear absorb bumps on gravel or desert trails. The handling is quite composed, with hill descent control helping in steep drops. The high 231 mm clearance on dunes makes it quite easier and comfy on long trips, also far lower body roll in turns, but it feels firm on sharp jolts. The steering gives you the feel for precision on winding roads, and the 4WD system is excellent in sandy conditions. The cabin, for the most part, is quiet even at high speed, thanks to better NVH.

A perfect choice for buyers who don’t want to spend a lot of money on a pickup or simply don't t have the budgeg. It is a durable work truck with a 1-ton payload, the 2WD, Low maintenance and robust performance are advantages.
Omega 4WD MT
At SAR 83,375, this 4WD manual gets off-road traction and hill controls. The 1.9L engine performs well on desert trails with 231 mm clearance, and it's rugged, with good towing capacity for light trailers, but lacks an automatic option. A solid choice for enthusiasts who want durable performance without paying the extra price.
Omega 4WD AT
Priced at SAR 89,125, the 4WD automatic offers convenience and has the same powertrain. But some premium features are added, like AC vents and a 360-degree camera, and families will find this of their liking. The automatic transmission has its benefits in city and on highway drives, and Eco mode boosts fuel efficiency, and you can balance work and leisure needs.
Delta 4WD AT
At SAR 98,325, the top-end variants get fully-loaded with features like leather accents, premium audio, wireless charging, and advanced safety tech. With the price premium, you get extra luxury and technology, and if budget is not a constraint, then this is for you, where capability is guaranteed with comfort in KSA.
Sayarabay Recommendation
The Omega 4WD AT (SAR 89,125) is our pick for some simple reasons. While the powertrain is the same, you get extra features that are necessary for a complete experience. This includes ESP, camera, and comfort without the Delta’s cost; the automatic transmission is useful for city and desert trips, and is considered suitable for work and leisure.
Despite being a Chinese brand, you’re assured of a greater reliability and value at a reasonable price. It is good for all types of customers' needs, be it small businesses, families or entrepreneurs.
Verdict
The Hunter is a rugged body with styling, a decent payload and a reasonable loaded cabin. With aggressive pricing, the Chinese brands are trying to take away market share from established brands, and to do that, they’re offering some compelling benefits with a well-built product. The Hustern is a great example of this strategy. If you’re fine with a Chinese brand, then you must visit their dealership to check this out before you make up your mind as to whether this is your next pickup.
