Hyundai’s Upcoming EV Will Be Unveiled This Year!

SAUDI ARABIA : Hyundai’s first-ever 3-row electric SUV will finally be debuting later this year and could be given the Ioniq nameplate

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What platform will the new Hyundai SUV be built on?

The SUV will be built on the E-GMP platform, the same one used for Hyundai's other electric models and the Kia EV9.
  • What features from the Ioniq 7 concept are expected to make it to production?

The pixel lighting and flush hood badge are expected to make it to production, but the large glass rear hatch and lounge-like interior may be replaced with more conventional elements.
    • We think Hyundai could just call it maybe an Ioniq 7 or even 9
    • This SUV will be Hyundai’s reply to the venerable Kia EV9
    • This comes a couple of years after the Ioniq 7 concept was unveiled

Ever since we saw a glimpse of the Ioniq 7 concept a couple of years ago, we have all been extremely excited and eager to see Hyundai launch a production version of the same. While it remains to be seen how closely the production model will resemble the concept—and what it will officially be named—Hyundai has confirmed that its first electric three-row SUV will be revealed later this year.

Beyond announcing the debut timeline, Hyundai has remained tight-lipped about its forthcoming family-sized EV. It's expected to be built on the same E-GMP platform that supports Hyundai’s other electric models, as well as corporate counterparts like the three-row Kia EV9. The EV9 likely hints at the powertrain and battery options for Hyundai’s new SUV, with the most powerful EV9 currently offering up to 379 horsepower and a battery capacity of 99.8 kWh.

The Ioniq 7 concept, showcased at the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2021, gives us a glimpse of what the production model might look like. Hyundai's recent concepts have often stayed true to their original designs. Key features expected to make it to production include the pixel lighting and the flush hood badge, though the large glass rear hatch and the lounge-like interior will probably be replaced with more conventional elements.

The name of Hyundai's three-row EV is still a mystery. While it seems logical to assume it will be called the Ioniq 7, there have been rumors about the name Ioniq 9 being a possibility. Or it could be something entirely different. More details will emerge as the debut draws nearer.

The new three-row EV is anticipated to utilize the E-GMP platform, the same one used for the Kia EV9, suggesting similar battery and powertrain configurations. The Concept Seven is expected to share its powertrain, feature set, and practical attributes with the EV9, following the pattern of shared platforms within the Hyundai-Kia group. Like the EV9, it will likely offer both six-seat and seven-seat configurations. However, as Hyundai holds a more senior position globally, it is expected to offer more six-seat variants compared to the EV9.
