Nissan has shared a new video highlighting key features of the upcoming Skoda Elroq competitor, which will start production in Sunderland soon. The company explains that, although the new LEAF looks very different and is positioned differently, its development benefited greatly from lessons learned from earlier Mk1 and Mk2 models.
The all-new LEAF is truly a third-generation electric car, built on experiences since the first model’s launch in 2010. Over the past 15 years, Nissan has sold nearly 700,000 LEAFs worldwide. Owners have travelled around 28 billion kilometres in total. These insights from previous versions helped the design and engineering team shape the latest model.

Key Exterior Highlights
The new LEAF has a bold and sleek look with the design focusing more on aerodynamics, giving it a strong presence on the road. Engineers worked closely with designers to make a car that was both family-friendly and visually appealing. It has an air drag coefficient of just 0.26 in the US and Japan. Models in Europe achieve an even lower 0.25 thanks to unique wheel designs and door mirrors.
Key features include unique LED lighting at the front, flush door handles, special wheel designs and an active grille shutter. The car’s fastback shape and flat underfloor help air flow smoothly around it.
Program Design Director Nobutaka Tase explained that every part of the design was chosen to save energy. Even the panoramic glass roof was made to improve aerodynamics by lowering the car’s height slightly without sacrificing headroom.
This roof includes an electric dimming feature. It can turn opaque with the press of a button, reducing glare and heat from the sun. The roof also protects against infrared rays with a special coating. The glass can block out excess sunlight and keep the interior cool, all while giving passengers more space and comfort.
Interior Enhancements
Inside, the new LEAF benefits from Nissan’s CMF-EV platform. It offers a flat floor that gives the cabin a spacious, open feel. The design makes the most of the space, making sure all passengers are comfortable.
A large screen will serve as the instrument panel, along with other creature comforts.

Battery, Range and Charging
Nissan has not shared all the details but says the new model will have a much longer range than the current one. This suggests the battery will be bigger than the 62.0-kWh pack found in the present Leaf. In the US, the car will come with a NACS port, letting drivers charge their LEAF at Tesla charging stations.
The LEAF is one of Nissan’s most celebrated models. It has been a symbol for the brand, representing its willingness to take risks. The LEAF was the first mass-market electric car, and it has played a key role in Nissan’s image. Its new technology keeps the LEAF relevant and innovative.
Richard Candler, Vice President of Global Product Strategy, said the new LEAF was designed to appeal to more than just electric car fans. Nissan wanted it to be a real choice for families and everyday drivers. It needed to look attractive and offer smart features while also meeting practical needs.
Keep following the series for more updates on the new LEAF, which is set to launch globally later this month.
