What features does the BYD Song Plus DMI get?

The interior of the BYD Song exhibits a blend of sophistication, modernity, and user-friendliness, a hallmark seen in other BYD vehicles we've driven. Central to this is a screen that can switch between landscape and portrait modes, a feature that enhances its utility. 

While physical buttons are provided for frequently used functions such as audio control and climate system activation, the touchscreen's superior graphics, fluid motion, and intuitive layout make it the preferred interface. This reflects BYD's strong roots in the mobile phone industry, evident in the screen's design and functionality.

The rear seats provide ample legroom, although the high floor relative to the seat cushion—due to the large battery pack underneath—might affect comfort. Unlike some plug-in hybrid SUVs that compromise cargo space by placing the battery in the trunk, the Song benefits from a spacious luggage area, showcasing the advantages of BYD's design choices. The Song Plus cabin we experienced featured vibrant, eye-catching colors, contrasting stitching, and real metal trim. 

How spacious is it?

The steering of the Song felt light and provided minimal feedback, yet it handled the rough roads remarkably well without significant kickback. Despite this, the ride quality was overly harsh, an observation highlighted by the challenging road conditions. Compared to other BYD models we drove on the same route, the Song's ride felt disproportionately bumpy.

There was considerable road noise, and although the Song didn't exhibit the squeaks and rattles of other BYD vehicles, each bump resulted in a low-frequency resonance that was quite unpleasant. This indicates a need for better suspension tuning. While our roads are exceptionally rough, the Song Plus might offer a more comfortable ride on smoother roads.

What powertrain options are available?

The Song is the first BYD vehicle we tested with an internal combustion engine, and the powertrain's refinement was a pleasant surprise. During our test drive, the Song operated seamlessly in both EV and hybrid modes, with the engine becoming audible only when revved. The transitions were so smooth that it was difficult to detect when the engine started or stopped, a level of refinement that other manufacturers have taken years to achieve.

Acceleration was robust at low speeds but tapered off at higher velocities, typical for a hybrid system based on a small 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine paired with a 177-hp electric motor. BYD claims a 0-100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration time of 8.5 seconds, which seemed accurate. The Song Plus offers two battery options, promising 100 to 150 kilometres of electric-only range under the optimistic NEDC cycle. While NEDC figures don't directly translate to EPA ratings due to different test cycles, these numbers likely equate to a practical range of 70 to 100 kilometres. 

How safe is the BYD Song Plus DMI?

The EV is equipped with an array of advanced safety features designed to ensure maximum protection and convenience for its occupants. It includes ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) with Smart Stop&Go functionality, allowing for smooth and intelligent driving adjustments. The vehicle is safeguarded by six airbags, including front airbags, front-seat side airbags, and air curtains, providing comprehensive coverage in the event of a collision. Blind Spot Detection enhances situational awareness, while Traffic Recognition and Emergency Braking make it safer. 

The Electronic Stability Program helps maintain control during challenging driving conditions. Pedestrian Protection and the Smart Light Assistant further contribute to overall safety, especially in urban environments. A 360º HD 3D panoramic camera offers a complete view around the vehicle, and tire pressure sensors ensure optimal tire performance. Additionally, the ISOFIX system ensures secure and easy installation of child seats.

Should you buy the BYD Song Plus DMI?

The BYD Song Plus’ biggest issue would be the way its chassis is tuned, apart from which, it is practical and aspirational. It offers ample interior space and comfort suitable for a two-row family SUV, complemented by a high-tech, user-friendly interior. The powertrain's refinement is commendable, though additional power would enhance its performance. 

The steering and suspension require further tuning, a process that historically took time for even the best automakers to perfect. Overall, the Song Plus could easily replace many of the popular SUVs on the market, and its owners would likely not miss their previous vehicles from brands like Honda, Chevrolet, Toyota, or Ford.
